Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are used early on in disease progression or as adjunct therapy in advance Parkinson disease.

These drugs block MAO, an enzyme that breaks down dopamine in neurons.
Side effects include insomnia, confusion, hallucinations, euphoria, dizziness, and postural hypotension.
MAOIs block the metabolism of tyramine, a substance used in aged and pickled foods.

Patients should limit intake of tyramine rich foods such as: aged cheese, red wine, beef, peppers, sausage, sauerkraut, and tap beer.
