Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. To be diagnosed, an individual must exhibit six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms that impair daily life in at least two settings for at least six months.Approximately 3-10% of school-aged children have some aspect of ADHD, whereas 5% of adults have the disorder. Hyperactivity symptoms decline with age; inattention and impulsivity can persist into adulthood.Often coexisting with ADHD is bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
Non-stimulant Drugs for ADHD
- Atomoxetine (Strattera) is a non-stimulant alternative that is not a controlled substance and can help with behavioral management.Atomoxetine works by potentiating norepinephrine and/or dopamine in the brain, which helps with focus and curb impulsivity, either on its own or in combination with CNS stimulants.Common side effects include nausea, heartburn, fatigue, and decreased appetite; can cause severe liver injury.
