Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. To be diagnosed, an individual must exhibit six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms that impair daily life in at least two settings for at least six months.
Approximately 3-10% of school-aged children have some aspect of ADHD, whereas 5% of adults have the disorder. Hyperactivity symptoms decline with age; inattention and impulsivity can persist into adulthood.
Often coexisting with ADHD is bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
